Open Spaces

Creating space for everyone

Over time the Olympic Park and its surrounding areas will form an integral and exciting new piece of the City.  The Park itself will be made up of the permanent Olympic venues, a mix of hard standing and green open spaces as well as a network of water courses. Our goal is to create parklands that will not only serve local needs, but become a major attraction in themselves.

We're already planning ahead to make this Park accessible to the public as soon as possible after 2012, with playgrounds, fields, allotments and open spaces for recreation..

Crafting a natural environment

With over three miles of rivers and canals running through the Park, the waterways will be a natural focal point. Cleaned and landscaped, there will be new routes, links and opportunities for walking, leisure and fun on the water, with great care taken not to disturb the natural ecosystem.

Framing the waterways and at the heart of the Olympic Park will be the beautifully landscaped and accessible parklands.

Over 2,000 trees will be planted, covering a range of native species and cultivating a wild biodiversity of plants and wildlife in the northern parklands.

A place to explore

Overall, there will be a huge variety of open spaces, pathways and covered areas to explore, with over 22 miles of interlinking pathways, waterways and cyclepaths, leading through the distinct neighborhoods within the park.

Over time, the Park will be a great focus for culture too, with exciting spaces and places for festivals, shows and events. It will be a Park with something for everyone.
