Employment
Over time, the Park and its transformation will become a key economic catalyst for the wider area, with the potential to provide thousands of new jobs. Our vision is to make this part of east London an attractive place to invest and do business and to create a range of job opportunities.
The types of job opportunities that the Park will create are likely to change over time. Initially, most jobs will be connected with transforming the Park after the Games. This is likely to involve sectors like: construction, security, as well as hospitality and leisure to support the schedule of events anticipated for the Park once it re-opens.
Other types of jobs and opportunities will be developed over time in many different sectors, tied in with the development and management of the whole of the Park and its surrounding areas. These may well include jobs in hospitality, retail, horticultural management, events, venue managers and housing specialists.
We firmly believe that it is important to encourage the many existing successful industries around the area, such as the creative industries in Hackney Wick. It is important to make sure that development is as sensitive as possible to the people who live and work there already.
We're also making sure that the Games venues can be adapted afterwards for business where possible. We want high-quality business accommodation, with well-chosen locations to attract investment, expand employment opportunities and encourage economic growth.
Throughout all of this development, we will support the work of the host boroughs and other partners who will continue to ensure that local communities have access to training opportunities to develop new skills.
After the Games, the Park could provide space and venues for a variety of businesses and industries, including:
- creative, arts and media
- education and training
- retail and leisure
- sport and recreation
- conservation and environmental
- professional and business services
- hospitality and tourism
By developing a new metropolitan area that's geared for business, we hope to create a unique set of employment opportunities to benefit the economy of the whole of the Lower Lee Valley.
Just like the athletes who'll compete at the Games, local people can benefit from getting into training now, to make the most of the new opportunities that will be available after the Games.
To support the Games and the development of the Park after 2012 there are lots of training and skills programmes available right now.
Many of these programmes are designed to help people re-skill and get into training, so that they're fit and ready for the opportunities that will present themselves in the run up to the Games and beyond.
