The London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games will be staged in some of the most iconic and important permanent new sports venues in the UK.
After the Games, the venues will be modified so that they can be used by both local people and high performance athletes long into the future. They will become an important part of keeping the memory of the 2012 Games alive, train the champions of the future, promote healthy living and act as a magnet for major sporting events, visitors, sports clubs and business.
With six out of the eight permanent Olympic venues’ futures secured with appointed operators, London is on course to secure the future use of every permanent venue before the Games have even started – a first for any Olympic City. And by working closely with sporting bodies and local communities now, we can ensure that these venues will have a full and compelling programme of activities for when they reopen after the Games.
Between 2012 and 2014 the Legacy Company will be in charge of transforming the Olympic Park, which will include removing temporary venues and walkways, and transforming the permanent venues into their long-term use. In the first quarter of 2013, we hope to begin to open up areas of the Park and some venues for public access, and to be able to stage some early attractions and events.
The Legacy Company will be ultimately responsible for the operational management of the whole Park, its venues and infrastructure. However, their management and maintenance will be delivered in conjunction with third-party operators, with the Company setting the parameters and negotiating the financial arrangements under which operators will run the venues. Our Estate and Facilities Management and ArcelorMittal Orbit management partner will be Balfour Beatty Workplace, whilst our Aquatics Centre and Multi-Use Arena management partner will be Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL). Processes to find operators for the other venues and facilities are presently underway and the operators will be announced in due course.
