Sustainability

Fit for the 21st Century

Sustainability was at the heart of London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and the Park will respect, and continue to deliver, on the ‘green’ initiatives of the Games, aiming to create a sustainable development that is in tune with the world’s changing climate and resource needs.

Using the best of the Games’ infrastructure, innovation and inspiration, the Park will provide a new blueprint for 21st Century sustainable city living. Residents and visitors will be encouraged to cycle and walk, using the bike routes and pathways that cover the entire Park.

The Park’s buildings will use the latest ‘green’ technologies and low-carbon design, minimising their overall environmental impact and their energy needs. The power that is required for much of the Park will be provided by a new Energy Centre, using the latest sustainable energy technology.

The Park will also feature other environmental innovations, such as ‘grey and black water’ recycling, where waste water from baths, sinks and washing machines is re-used elsewhere on-site.

The Park was conceived as an environmental showcase and will continue to strive for environmental excellence.
