Creating Communities
The Park is much more than just new housing, open spaces and world-class venues. It is also about everything in between that helps a community to flourish - community centres, medical and health facilities, schools, local shops, training and employment opportunities.
What we are building must be an inclusive part of the city. We are aiming for a new area of London that is open and integrated with all the surrounding communities, with high quality, accessible services and real opportunities for economic growth.
This transformation will take time. Although the Park's development will be carefully planned and considered over several decades, it will also be an organic process.
We're listening and working closely with local people to make sure every aspect of the Park makes a positive contribution to the area. We want to ensure that London's East End retains its character, and that its communities are part of this change.
Local communities and residents will always be at the heart of the Park, which is why we need local input to make sure it's a success.
Although we're working closely with many public and third sector partners, it's important that everyone has a say in how the plans unfold and that there is a strong sense of community ownership.
We've been consulting and working closely with local communities and individuals, and will continue to do so - it's a key part of our commitment to the Park and its success.
Already there are a number of examples of plans being adapted based on community feedback:
- We are currently reviewing the amount of family housing planned in the Park, as people told us they wanted more
- We have reconsidered the ideas for new place names based on feedback from local residents
- We have listened to concerns about the quality of the parkland and access to open spaces and we'll be co-ordinating the overall management of the Park to make sure that local people can get the best out of it.
We are listening and looking at all the options from a community perspective.
We're working closely with the five host boroughs of Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets, Waltham Forest and Greenwich, the Olympic Delivery Authority and Lee Valley Regional Park Authority to plan quality services for the Park and its neighbourhoods.
